ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Saʿūd (generally referred to as Ibn Saʿūd ) (c.1880-1953) was the founder of the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He was born in Riyadh during a period of decline in the power of the Āl Saʿūd family. His father, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Fayṣal, belonged to the Āl Saʿūd lineage that ruled the second Saʿūdī state (1824-34 and 1843-91). His mother, Sārra bint Aḥmad, came from the Āl Sudayrī clan. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz had seven brothers (including half-brothers) and became the leader
