Aḥmad Ibn Abī l-Ḍiyāf (1802-74) was, from 1827 to 1867, the personal secretary to the Ḥusaynid governors who had ruled the Ottoman province of Tunis since 1117/1705. He wrote an important chronicle in Arabic about the history of Tunisia and played a major role in 1861 in the promulgation of the first national constitution in a Muslim country. His family was part of the Awlād ʿŪn tribe in the Silyāna, southwest of Tunis. Ḍiyāf's father moved to Tunis and became, by the end of the twelfth/
