The fortress is a common form of defensive building across the Islamic world. These military structures are found in rural areas and may be distinguished from urban defensive features (including citadels that acted as centres of government, market structures, or khān s, and fortified perimeter walls). The term used most commonly in Arabic is qalʿa , but qaṣr or ḥiṣn are also used; Persian uses dazh/dizh and Turkish kale or hisar .
