The Chuvash are a Turkic-speaking people residing on the Volga River, between Nizhni Novgorod and Kazan. Based on a sub-census of 1995, about half of the approximately 1.7 to 1.8 million Chuvash, most of whom are Russian Orthodox Christians, live in the Chuvash Republic of the Russian Federation, whose capital is Cheboksary (Russian)/Shupashkar (Chuvash). Small groups of Chuvash live in Ukraine and Kazakhstan. The Chuvash livelihood was traditionally based on agriculture, including some animal husbandry.
