Berar (Berār) is a region in the Deccan, located south of the Vindhya mountains and paralleled by the Satpura range, where the Tapti River originates. A tributary of the Tapti, the Purna, divides Berar into a northern region, containing Gawilgarh and Narnala, two of the Deccan's most impressive mountain forts, and a southwestern region bordered by the Ajanta range, east of which was the mighty fort of Mahur.
