The bazaar , as it existed in Anatolia and the Balkans during the Saljūq and Ottoman periods, was a shopping area, open or covered, that served all classes and denominations. The Ottoman Turkish word bazar (Mod. Turk. pazar ), from Persian bāzār , was replaced in the fourteenth century by çarsu ( çarşı in modern Turkish), from Persian chahār-sū (lit., four sides). In common Turkish usage the word pazar does not designate a type of building but rather an open market area. In daily usage, çarşı and arasta (from Pers. ārasta ) are also
