Muḥammad Sulaymān al-Aḥmad, known as Badawī al-Jabal (1907-81), was a poet born in the Jabal ʿAlawī of northern Syria, the son of an ʿAlawī imām who was well versed in classical Arabic and Islamic studies and a member of the Arab Academy of Language in Damascus. Nurtured in this learned atmosphere, Badawī al-Jabal had first-hand knowledge of the poetry of the famous classical poets, especially al-Buḥturī, Abū Tammām, al-Mutanabbī, al-Maʿarrī, and the famous Shīʿī poet al-Sharīf al-Raḍī.
