An attorney or attorney-at-law is a person trained in a law school who acts under specific legal regulations for a client. In classical fiqh , the word wakīl (pl. wukalāʾ ) refers generally to someone who has the trust or mandate of another person and is allowed or requested to act in his or her place. In modern times, the classical terms survive as generic appellations: wakīl means "attorney," and wikāla means "power of attorney" (Fr. mandat ). The modern lawyer (Fr. avocat , Ger. Rechtsanwalt ), however, is more commonly called a
