Antalya , a town in the Republic of Turkey, is situated on a natural harbour in the innermost northwestern bend of the bay of the same name. The town sits some thirty metres above the Mediterranean Sea on a travertine terrace, on a fertile plain (Turk. Antalya Ovası). It is also the capital of the province of Antalya (Antalya İli/Vilayeti) and an important tourist centre. Its history dates to pre-Roman times, when it was named Attaleia after its founder, King Attalos II of Bergama (159-138 B.C.E.),
