Almaty (Russ., Alma-Ata), situated between the steppes of southern Kazakhstan and the slopes of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountain range, was the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan (formerly the Soviet Socialist Republic of Kazakhstan). Almaty was founded on the site of a Kazakh settlement (called Almaty) as a Cossack stanitsa named Zailiyskiy in 1854; it was renamed Vernyĭ ("The Faithful") in 1855. After the region was conquered by the Russians, the small military town became the administrative centre of the Russian governorate of Semirech'e in 1867. In
