Maḥmūd Sāmī al-Bārūdī (1839-1904), known as shāʿir al-nahḍa ("the poet of the renaissance"), holds an important place in the early modern literary and political history of Egypt. He distinguished himself in military and governmental service during the late Ottoman period, and during the course of his lifetime he left a body of poetry that contributed to the shift of poetic sensibility from highly embellished conventional themes and tropes to fresh, immediate, and emotional concerns rooted in contemporary imagery and experience.
