Abū Yaʿqūb Yūsuf b. ʿAbd al-Muʾmin (r. 558-80/1163-84) was the second caliph of the Almohad (Muʾminid) dynasty, a patron of philosophy and architecture, a military leader more concerned with consolidation than conquering, and a statesman. The beginning of his reign was rocked by conflicts over succession. His father, ʿAbd al-Muʾmin (r. 527-58/1133-63), had designated Muḥammad, Yūsuf's older brother by a different mother, as heir apparent.
