Abū Tammām Ḥabīb b. Aws al-Ṭāʾī (d. 231/845 or 232/846) was a poet and anthologist who collected earlier poetry and merged its elements into his own modern, abstract style, which became popular with the elite. His work accentuated the rift between the "ancients" and the "moderns" and fueled the first debates in the nascent genre of poetic criticism.
