Abū ʿUbayda Maʿmar b. al-Muthannā al-Taymī (c.110-c.210/c.728-c.825, with other dates for his death varying between 207/822 and 213/828), was an Arabic philologist of Basra. Like his grandfather, a Persian Jew from Bājarwān (Azerbaijan) who converted to Islam, Abū ʿUbayda was a mawlā of the Banū Taym b. Murra (Quraysh). He grew up in Basra; studied under ʿAmr b. al-ʿAlāʾ, Yūnus b. Ḥabīb, ʿĪsā b. ʿUmar, and al-Akhfash al-Akbar; and became one of the most knowledgeable experts
