Īliyyā Abū Māḍī (1890-1957) was a famous and illustrious Arab-American poet. He was born in the village of al-Muḥayditha in Lebanon, where he received his elementary education. In 1901 he emigrated to Alexandria, where he earned his living selling cigarettes in his uncle's shop, spending his free time mainly in mastering the Arabic language. During his eleven-year stay in Alexandria he began his poetic career, publishing his first compilation, Tadhkār al-māḍī ("Memory of the past"), in 1911. That same year he emigrated to North
