ʿAbdallāh b. Khulayd al-Aʿrābī Abū l-ʿAmaythal (d. 240/854), an Arab lexicographer and poet, was a mawlā of Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān (or of the Banū Hāshim, as he himself claimed). He was born in al-Rayy but spent most of his life in Khurāsān, where he entered the Ṭāhirid court as secretary to Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn. He became tutor to ʿAbdallāh b. Ṭāhir and his sons and was also secretary, librarian, and highly esteemed jalīs of ʿAbdallāh himself. His predilection for lexicography and poetry is reflected in
