Abū l-Aswad al-Duʾalī (probably d. 69/688-9) was an Arab poet who was born before Islam and became a Muslim during the Prophet's lifetime. He was a traditionist (muḥaddith) and a littérateur (adīb, muʾaddib, muʿallim) , who lived during the early decades of the Islamic empire; he ultimately became a judge (qāḍī) at Basra, where he died at the age of eighty-five. Biographical information on Abū l-Aswad, although often biased and contradictory, suggests the following outline of his life. His name is given as Ẓālim
