Syrian refugee adolescents are arriving in the Region of Peel, Ontario, Canada and enrolling in schools in the Peel District School Board in vast numbers; 1,000 new students have entered Canadian school systems in 2018 alone. The researcher, an educator in the Peel District School Board, interviewed 12 Syrian refugee adolescents and two Syrian adults, along with their assigned school settlement worker from the Newcomer Peel Agency to obtain data directly from the participants, as well as from an individual who works directly with the entire Syrian refugee population enrolled in a Peel District School in Mississauga, Ontario. Consent was received for the informant to act as representative of the Syrian adolescent refugees interviewed. Through the conceptual framework of the Ontario Human Rights Code, and an application of Critical Theory, a qualitative, phenomenological study was conducted to develop an understanding of the lived experiences of these Syrian refugee adolescents and their resettlement in Canadian society. The analyzed data produced the following six emergent themes difficulties navigating and obtaining documentation requirements, access to health care, differences in education systems, gaps in education, an initial sense of happiness and relief which wanes within three years, and a disappointment with the lack of integration experienced within Canadian society. These themes which emerged from the data serve to illustrate the lived experiences of adolescent Syrian refugees in Ontario and speak to the need for increased support at the school and community levels.
