There is high demand for Catholic clergy in Nigeria to engage in marital, mental healthcare, family and personal counseling. However, available resources of their seminary formation show inadequate preparation in both skills and techniques for pastoral counseling services. This project explores the necessity of integrating counseling training into the seminary formation of Nigerian Catholic clergy. Through assessed needs, the use of clinical pragmatism with person-centered therapy and existentialism theory is a viable model of integrating counseling skills training into the seminary formation. This allows priests and religious to gain emotional and psychological maturity that allows sensitivity to their personal and social cultural experiences. Additionally, the clergy counseling skills training program? is proposed in detail, such that it provides the framework for the formation of priests and religious. Finally, the project highlighted future research with regard to potential limitations and implications of counseling skills training for clergy.
