Drilling a new hydrocarbon well produces a large amount of cuttings that need to be circulated out of the wellbore in a process called Hole Cleaning. Failure to do so will cause several problems such as: stuck pipes, an increase of torque, decrease of drilling rate and rate of penetration, formation fracturing and fluid losses (Wakhyudin, Setiawan, & Marjuan, 2017). These issues can lead to additional financial costs due to the increase of rig time and the addition of more mud additives and operations; such as acidizing jobs, in case of a stuck pipe for example. For oil and gas companies, higher expenditure caused by hole-cleaning problems can lead to less hydrocarbon production with more operational down-time and thus less net profit. The target of this research is to evaluate the hole cleaning capability of drilling fluids using different parameters such as: cutting size, cutting sphericity, fluid viscosity and fluid salinity. The research is based on experimental data obtained based on calculating the terminal velocity of sample particles as a measurement of cutting transport performance of sample fluids. The experiments were done using testing container and high-speed camera to calculate terminal velocity of different testing particles and rock samples using different drilling fluids. The results were used to observe the effect of changing different parameters on the cutting transport process. In addition, drag coefficient versus Reynolds number curves were plotted based on the collected data which are parameter specific that can be used easily and quickly in wellsites to calculated drilling fluid properties based on the desired drag coefficient.
