Though much ink has been spilled over Deborah, scholarship still cannot agree on her significance within the book of Judges. This thesis will argue that Deborah should be read as an extraordinary woman, unique within the scope of the Old Testament, and that it is appropriate to read her narrative and character against an ancient Near Eastern backdrop. In such a reading, comparisons emerge between Deborah in the Hebrew text and certain female characters in Ancient Near Eastern literature that may suggest a portrayal of Deborah as a human female who is inspired by certain extra-human literary motifs, and which is useful to the final form of the text in highlighting the superior power of YHWH over the Canaanite deities.
