Currently, little research exists on the struggle between assimilation and community isolation for the more than 300,000 Bosnian-American Muslim children and their parents and on their personal attempts to help preserve their ethnic and religious identity. These children are often in academic and social situations that challenge their ethics and family norms, and as a result, many lose connection to their parents' language, land, customs, and religion. The purpose of this case study was to uncover the reasons that parents choose to enroll their children in programs designed to preserve the ethnic and religious identities of Bosnian-American Muslims. The 24 respondents under study resided in the Chicago area and were active members at one of the four local Bosnian-Islamic centers, with children that attended the Bosnian-American weekend Islamic schools. They were interviewed using an interview instrument found in Appendix A to uncover the reasons why parents enroll their children in weekend Islamic school and other community cultural and educational programs. In this Dissertation, the results of these interview were analyzed using heuristic techniques to fully understand what was uncovered about the experiences of these parents in the Chicago area. The findings of interviews at the four centers were compared to each other with a goal of finding ways in which to make them transferable to the other 50-plus Bosnian-American communities in the United States.
