Flow cytometry has proven to be an invaluable tool for both analysis of cellular populations and detection of biomarkers. Utility of flow cytometry will not be limited to the laboratory for much longer. This volume describes the continuing development of inexpensive, portable flow cytometers through incorporation of microscale technologies and small optical components. The underlying microfluidic theories essential for microflow cytometry are discussed, as well as advances that are representative of the current state-of-the-art. Leading researchers describe the design and fabrication strategies for innovative component technologies. Integration of the components into functional prototype devices is reviewed with a goal of on-site analysis and manipulation of particles and cells.
