This thesis adopts the perspective of multiple modernities and focuses on the nature of modernisation in contemporary Kuwait in industrial, economic, political and cultural terms, arguing that the particular form of Kuwaiti modernity is reflected in cultural change in phenomena such as the leisure lives of female citizens of Kuwait. The thesis focuses on female Kuwaiti citizens (who constitute 30.5% of the total female population). The methodological approach adopted involves thematic analysis of the life stories of a purposive sample of Kuwaiti women (n=61). The sample is selected to reflect the nature of social stratification among the population of Kuwaiti citizens, which is most commonly seen as consisting of four principle strata (i.e. the ruling family, the merchant class, the Hadhar and the Badu). Interviews with women from the smallest category, the ruling family, were not undertaken because of issues of access, but the distribution of interviewees across the other three strata provides rich qualitative data concerning women s experience of, and engagement with, the modernisation process. The thematic analysis identifies three elements or social contexts which frame the development of women s leisure lives in Kuwait. The first is the religious context: where three socio-religious ideologies are identified which shape, and are shaped by, women s attitudes to activities in the leisure and recreation domain. These ideological positions incorporate religious conservatism constructed around arguments concerning Islamic principles or Islamist religious arguments; Muslim liberalism; Islamic Reformism and Religious Conservativism. The second element relates to the political and economic context which focuses on the state s role in, and women s experience of, public sector provision, commercial provision, provision by the voluntary sector and self-provision in the leisure and recreation domain. The third element involves the social and cultural context, focusing on the differing experiences of women across each of the social strata, and in particular the competing values of individualism and collectivism in women s lives as Kuwaiti society undergoes its rapid transformation form a traditional pre-industrial society, to a form of Kuwaiti modernity.
