In 1944, Ahiska/Meskhetians lived in over 200 villages in the Soviet Republic of Georgia. In November of that year, this population, as well as other Muslim minorities in the region, was forced onto freight trains and deported to Central Asia. Although never formally accused of collaboration with the enemy, Ahiska/Meskhetians lived under a cloud of suspicion and were forbidden from returning to Georgia. For this Turkish-speaking Muslim people, the binary name, "Ahiska/Meskhetians," bespeaks the "incommensurable histories" that have been wrought by displacement-a lack of consensus on their ethno-national origins that continues to confound humanitarian aid workers and rights activists, exasperate political leaders, and dismay community members.
