An opportunity for Muslims to challenge the Islamic extremists may be pursued through cultural and religious educational outreach in non-formal educational settings with non-Muslims. The problem addressed in this study was that overall non-Muslims and Muslims remain unaware of the cultural and religious educational outreach that is being conducted by individual groups of Muslims to address Islamophobia, monolithic perceptions about Islam (Kohut et al., 2011), and perceived homogeneity of Muslims (Revell, 2010). The purpose of this qualitative, narrative research study was to describe and document the perceptions and experiences of one US Muslim group's educational outreach efforts since 9/11 to dispel Islamophobia, challenge monolithic perceptions about Islam, and demonstrate heterogeneity of Muslims. A qualitative research study was conducted using a narrative design. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview guide with eight members of an Islamic Speaker's Bureau (ISB) organization in one western U.S. state. A purposeful sample was selected from members of this ISB. Eight participants described their experiences with and perceptions about the cultural and religious educational outreach they conduct. The experiences described by this study's participants provided insight into the internal Muslim community and its need to understand the distinctions between culture and religion and to support the educational outreach of the ISB. The results demonstrated the context and complexities that members from one affiliate of a larger organization have in conducting this work. The conclusions from this study suggested that the ISB participants had experiences with monolithic perceptions and Islamophobia. The conclusions from this study also suggested that heterogeneity was an element within the participants' narratives. The researcher of this study concluded that stereotypes about Muslims needed to be reduced in both the external non-Muslim and internal Muslim community to demonstrate the heterogeneity of Muslims. Future research should include a comparative analysis of certified speakers from several affiliates of the Islamic Group (IG) and with a larger sample. The researcher also recommends a quantitative study to explore any potential relationship between the educational outreach and the recipients of the education.
