This book provides a state-of-the-art review of the various aspects of epithelial cell invasion by Shigellla. The molecular mechanism of entry intocells, intracellular growth and cell-to-cell spread are analysed as well as genetics, structure, and function of Shiga toxin and of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Finally, the applications of these studiesin the development of vaccines are reviewed. This exhaustive coverage was made possible by a collaborative effort of some of the major researchers in the field.
