They share the belief that modern world history must be understood, not simply as a sum of national histories or a chronical of inter-state affairs, but also as a story of connections and circulation, by people, goods, ideas and skills. These are not always confined to any particular country or region of the world, nor are they identifiable with states or governments. The essence of history can only be fully understood by following the flows, ties and appropriations they trigger across borders.
