Using the literary and cinematic works of postcolonial African filmmakers and novelists, this research argues that as a consequence of colonization, African political elites are becoming materialistic (strong desire of commodities), ineffective, and corrupt. Further, it argues that the desire for commodities is playing a significant role in social and political transformation in postcolonial Africa by examining different perspectives on how commodities are influencing postcolonial African societies. At the same time, the thesis reveals that Western critical theories of commodities are applicable to the new Africa where commodities tend to replace social relations and also influence Africa's political and international situation.
