This dissertation explores how Social Movement Organizations (SMOs), such as Visthar, and their secular social change agendas assist Indian Christian contextual theologians to critically respond to contemporary globalization. In this interdisciplinary case study, I prove my hypothesis that Visthar can provide alternative narratives for theologians to construct models, to encourage churches, and to develop a critical language to address neo-liberalization as they negotiate (and resist) the rapidly developing economic and cultural-ideological processes of globalization. In this theological engagement, Visthar contributes to an alternative development paradigm as it impacts marginalized communities in Bengaluru (Bangalore) city. In sum, this research affirms the ethical integrity and the epistemological privilege of marginalized communities in contemporary translocal processes. The research responds as it negotiates and engages issues that negatively impact the marginalized in their struggle for socio-economic justice in their local contexts and in their globally interdependent lives. These locally grounded realities and translocal processes have critical implications for religious and theological scholarship and activism around the world.
