The goal of my research is to examine the adoption of Zapatista ideologies within Latino activist organizations in Southern California and to further examine how these ideologies have translated into these organizations' concepts of gender equality. I studied a Chicano student activist organization called Voz and a small group of farmers known as Rancheros Unidos. As grassroots movements, these progressive organizations seek to eradicate oppression and provide a voice to the oppressed, both globally and within their local communities. I will explore the feminist and gender politics within these organizations by closely examining their understandings of gender and transnational feminisms. Additionally, I will be examining the implementation of counter-hegemonic Zapatista gender-equity ideologies within these organizations. Through employing qualitative and ethnographic methods, such as field observations and 8 in-depth individual interviews, I seek to understand how Voz and Rancheros Unidos have adopted the Zapatistas' doctrine of gender equality within their respective organizations. Many of the men and women of these organizations have begun to define their political ideologies as based upon the concept of Zapatismo . In studying these crucially relevant topics, I hope to serve as a bridge to el otro lado , or "the other side," of the Americas.
