SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
Introduction: There has recently been a great shift towards participatory design techniques, in which Future Workshop could be considered as a useful approach, specifically in ergonomics projects. This tool has widely been employed in detecting problems, discovering solutions, and developing new horizons in work systems. The current paper serves to describe a program of work undertaken to determine the key factors in designing industrial chairs through this technique. Materials & Methods: After filling Questionnaires, it had been measured 12 dimensions of people that have sedentary work. Two Future Workshop sessions were arranged, including five main stages. A total of 40 factory workers participated in the study (20 participants attending each session) after that, some of them participated in a Reparatory Grid Technic (RGT) to determination of different parameters of chair. The groups were formed through stratified and random sampling methods, in a way to maximize the diversity of opinions and attitudes towards the usability of the chair to be designed. Results: The results revealed that from workers point of view the principal problematic issues in relation to poor design of their current industrial chairs could be classified into three major sections. Content analyses on the information developed through sessions showed that employees were mostly dissatisfied with the design of Back Support, Seat Height, and Seat Pan. Statistical analyses on Body Mapping diagrams likewise, confirmed the results of the Future Workshops and indicated considerable discomfort and pain patterns on Neck, Back, and both Wrists of the employees. At the end through the result of RGT and Future Workshop the industrial chair redesigned. Discussion: The enhanced overall population knowledge level and workers potential capabilities in one hand, and implementing participatory ergonomics principles on the other hand, has improved employees contribution in detecting workplace problems and introducing appropriate solutions. Keywords Ergonomics, Participatory Design, Industrial Chair.
