This study investigates gender differences in EFL free-writings on self vs. others written by males and females on designated topics in the Iranian context. To fulfill the purpose of the study,176 students, 88 males and 88 females, with an average age of 21 from the universities and language institutions of East and West Azerbaijan, Iran were selected randomly to participate in the study. All of them were given a paper to write about two topics entitled A) Describe yourself and B) Describe an important person in your life. Then the papers were analyzed according to Mayer’s five basic text organizational structures and his signal words. The obtained data were analyzed by statistical tests such as one-way ANOVA and post hoc tests. The statistical analyses revealed that male participants outperformed the females in self-description writing while female participants obtained higher scores than males in describing others. The implications of the study are discussed.

این مطالعه به بررسی تفاوتهای جنسیتی در نوشتههای آزاد زبان انگلیسی در مورد خود در مقابل سایر نوشتههای مرد و زن در موضوعات تعیینشده در زمینه ایرانی میپردازد. به منظور تحقق هدف پژوهش، 176 دانشجوشامل 88 مرد و 88 زن با میانگین سنی 21 سال از دانشگاه ها و موسسات زبان آذربایجان شرقی و غربی ایران به صورت تصادفی برای شرکت در پژوهش انتخاب شدند. به همه آنها برگه هایی اده شد تا در مورد دو موضوع با عناوین الف) خودتان را توصیف کنید، ب) یک شخص مهم در زندگی خود را توصیف کنید. سپس مقالات با توجه به پنج ساختار سازمانی متن اصلی مایر و کلمات سیگنال او تجزیه و تحلیل شدند. داده های به دست آمده با استفاده از آزمون های آماری مانند آنالیز واریانس یک طرفه و آزمون تعقیبی مورد تجزیه و تحلیل قرار گرفت. تجزیه و تحلیلهای آماری نشان داد که «توصیف خود مرد» بهطور معنیداری بالاتر از «توصیف دیگر زن» و همچنین «توصیف خود زن» بهطور معنیداری بالاتر از «توصیف دیگر مرد» است.
