SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
In this dissertation, we first study some known methods including finite differencemethod for initial and boundary value problems. Then, we introduce a new finite difference method with a variable step for solving second order boundary value problems whichhave an internal boundary condition. The convergence of the proposed method was discussed and it was established that the convergence have accuracy at least cubic order. We tested the numerical solutions of the proposed method on several model problems. Toconfirm the theoretical results for the proposed method, we provide the numerical resultsfor model problems with known exact solution. Computational results that we obtainedfor these model problems show that the method is efficient and accurate.
