SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT

Today, Posthumanism is a controversial issue which has received great attention from authors and critics. It is obvious that womens lives have been revolutionized by the help of new technologies for good and evil and literature as the mirror of life and society endeavors to reflect human beings upcoming future. This thesis aims to investigate the two ends of the spectrum of Posthumanism through analyzing two fictional works. One novel, The Stepford Wives and its two movie adaptations represent the powers overuse of technology to dominate women and the other novel, The Handmaids Tale, gives us an example of Post post-humanism when all the technologies that women once had, have been taken by the authorities. In both novels, women are deprived of choices, desires, ambitions, interests; and the language that they use is, on the one hand, extremely limited and on the other hand observed by those in power. The research generally seeks to answer three questions in three chapters: How have womens attitudes towards their bodies changed in a technological Posthuman/Post-posthuman world? How are womens Posthuman/Post-posthuman identities constructed? And, how does literature challenge the utopian claims of a Posthuman world? The study draws on relevant theories in relation to Posthumanism, body, identity and utopian literature. In conclusion, the research shows how authorities and holders of power in Posthuman or Post-posthuman worlds can, consciously or unconsciously, oppress women by dehumanizing and objectifying them through reducing their functions in the society and changing their attitudes towards their bodies and identities and how literature can rightly warn us that no technological advancement can create utopias for people and particularly for women, as long as patriarchy and self-interested power remain the main actors on the stage of the world.
