Interlocutors affect each other in the process of interaction, and so do reader and author, both taking part in the comprehension of a text. The work that the author does in producing the text has to be supplemented and completed by the reader. Literary pragmatics is relatively a newly- developed area which looks at this process within represented speech and thought (RST); it tries to explain the distance between reader and writer. The adopted framework is based on Leech and Shorts refined model of speech and thought presentation; within this framework, this study attempted to paraphrase the text with the help of textual mechanisms and understanding stream of consciousness. In doing so, this study investigated the occurrence of speech and thought presentation in William Faulkners complex novel The Sound and the Fury; its design followed mixed method, and the data was collected manually. Moreover, the results were inserted into excel worksheet in order to use descriptive statistics to quantify them; finding 3445 instances of the categories of analysis in question within which direct and free direct speech took place approximately eighteen times more than the other categories of speech and thought. Furthermore, free direct thought was observed more than the other categories of thought; suggesting that the author followed the norm or baseline for the presentation of speech; while not abiding by the norm for the presentation of thought. The verbatim report of speech showed that the narrator vacates the stage and does not interfere in report, leaving it to the readers to interpret and construct the characters intentions; The use of Free Direct Thought. (FDT), on the other hand, indicated that the narrator either is in total control of his thought like Jason or is watching his thoughts passively as they go by like Quentin. This study theoretically and practically contributes to ELT in that it familiarizes readers with different instances of Representation of Speech and Thought which might be helpful in retrieving correct interpretations from the context. Furthermore, this research is useful for English learners and teachers to improve story-telling techniques and syllabus design.

طرفین گفتگو بر روی هم بسیار تاثیر گذار هستند همین ارتباط در متون ادبی نیز صدق میکند خواننده و نویسنده تاثیر به سزایی در پیشبرد داستان دارند اثری که نویسنده خلق میکند باید توسط خواننده تکمیل شود منظور شناسی ادبی حوزه ایست که نسبتا به تازگی توسعه یافته و این روند را با استفاده از بیان اندیشه و گفتار تسهیل بخشیده است و سعی میکند تا فاصله نویسنده و خواننده را توضیح دهد علی رغم عدم دسترسی خواننده به طرفین گفتگو در یک اثر ادبی نویسنده تلاش میکند تا از طریق مکانیسم های متنی و نقل قول های مختلف موجود این ارتباط را تسهیل بخشد چارچوب اقتباس شده در این مطالعه بر اساس مدل اصلاح شده نمایش اندیشه و گفتار لیچ و شورت میباشد دادهها به صورت دستی جمع‌آوری شده و نتایج حاصل در صفحه گسترده اکسل قرار گرفته شده است تا بدین طریق آماری توصیفی برای شمارش داده‌ها فراهم سازد .در این تحقیق همچنین سعی شده است تا از شیوه‌های مختلف نمایش اندیشه و گفتار برای تفسیر یک ژانر ادبی استفاده شود . رمان خشم و هیاهو اثر فاکنر بدین منظور انتخاب شده است و در طرح این پژوهش از روش ترکیبی استفاده شده است طبق این تحقیق فاکنر در این رمان از قاعده و معیار در بیان نقل قول بهره جسته ولی در بیان اندیشه از این کار اجتناب کرده است . از نتایج حاصل از این تحقیق، در تهیه و تدوین مطالب درسی و بیان شفاهی داستان میتوان بهره گرفت به طور کلی3445 مثال از مشخصه های نمایش اندیشه و گفتار در این رمان به کار رفته است که نقل قول مستقیم و آزادانه بیشترین تعداد را در این میان به خود اختصاص داده اند . به طوری که استفاده از آنها تقریبا 18 برابر بیشتر از سایر مشخصه‌های اندیشه و گفتار است که بیانگر این موضوع است که راوی صحنه را ترک کرده و در گزارش گفتار ها دخالتی ندارد و کلمه به کلمه گفتار شخصیتها را تکرار کرده و از این حیث وفادار است در بیان اندیشه نیز تفکر مستقیم و آزادانه بیشترین تعداد را داشته که نشان دهنده ی دو مطلب است یا راوی داستان کنترل کاملی بر روی افکار خود دارد مانند شخصیت جیسن و یا اینکه نظاره‌گر افکار خودش می باشد مانند کونتین این پایان نامه هم به صورت تئوری و هم به صورت عملی به آموزش زبان انگلیسی کمک میکند چون خوانندگان را با شیوههای مختلف نمایش اندیشه و گفتار آشنا میکند و هم اینکه .باعث میشود تا به تفسیر درستی از متن دست پیدا کنیم
