Verb Phrase Ellipsis (VPE) is a prevailing phenomenon in every natural language, but only a few studies have contributed to investigation of its occurrences, and those that have contributed, have only focused on one genre. This study seeks to compare two different genres namely modern prose fiction with approximately 130000 words and political discourse with the same number of the words according to their uses of VPE. In doing so we have annotated VPE triggers, the start and end of antecedent, antecedent syntactic type, and have measured the distance of ellipsis from its antecedent. We found 390 instances of VPE and 19 cases of related phenomena such as do so anaphora in which there were some deviations from what is accepted in literature. Furthermore the use of VPE in modern prose fiction was three times more than political discourse. This might suggest that VPE in modern prose fiction might be used as heightening of emotion, as an engaging instrument of readers, and as a tool for challenging their minds, while, in political discourse apart from arising the emotion, it may be used as mitigating of face threatening acts. It was also found that the antecedent in modern prose fiction was more distant than in political discourse, which might decrease the accuracy of retrieving the antecedent in modern prose fiction more than in political discourse. The study theoretically and practically contributes to ELT and linguistics discipline in that it helps develop the understanding of each discourse type and the successful teaching and learning of English language.

عبارت فعلی حذف شده، یک پدیده غالب در هر زبانی است .با این حال مطالعات کمی به بررسی عمکرد آنها پرداخته و این تعداد کم هم، فقط به یک ژانر اختصاص داده شده اند .این تحقیق دو ژانر متفاوت سیاسی و تخیلی مدرن را که هر کدام از آنها دارای 130000 کلمه می باشند، از لحاظ عبارت فعلی حذف شده بررسی کرده است .برای دست یابی به این هدف محقق عبارتهای فعلی که منجر به حذف فعل اصلی شده اند، ابتدا و انتهای مرجع فعل، نوع ساختار مرجع فعل و فاصله بین عبارت حذف شده و مرجع را مشخص و اندازه گیری کرده است .به طور کلی 390 مثال از عبارت فعلی حذف شده و 19 پدیده مرتبط با آن پیدا شدند که برخی از این مثال ها با آنچه که در پیشینه این موضوع است، فرق داشتند .همچنین فهمیدیم که استفاده از عبارت فعلی حذف شده در ژانر تخیلی مدرن بیش از سه برابر آن در ژانر سیاسی بود .با توجه به این نتیجه، عبارت فعلی حذف شده در ژانر تخیلی مدرن می تواند نشانگر استفاده از این پدیده به عنوان بر انگیخته کردن احساسات و به عنوان ابزاری برای جذب خواننده و به چالش کشیدن ذهن او باشد .در حالی که در متن سیاسی هدف از استفاده عبارت فعلی حذف شده علاوه بربرانگیخته کردن احساسات می تواند به عنوان کاهش دهنده کنش های تهدید کننده چهره به کار برده شود .همچنین این تحقیق نشان داد که مرجع فعل حذف شده در متن تخیلی مدرن به مراتب دورتر از متن سیاسی است، که این مسئله باعث کاهش دقت در پیدا کردن مرجع فعل در متن تخیلی می شود .این مطالعه به گسترش درک بیشتر ژانر های متفاوت و در نتیجه آموزش و یادگیری موفقیت آمیز زبان انگلیسی، هم از لحاظ نظری و هم از لحاظ عملی کمک می کند
