SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
The present study aimed to determine the relationship between role-playing and second language vocabulary learning. The purpose of this study was to observe whether role-playing was an interaction which can effectively trigger learning of vocabulary. Therefore, following a quasi-experimental design, the Vocabulary Levels Test (Schmitt, 2000) was used as standardized placement tests in order to divide the 60 female participants into elementary and intermediate proficiency levels within four groups. The participants were meeting extensive English language courses in Iranian institute aging between 10 and 15. Then, two further tests were designed and administered as the pre-tests and post-tests which were piloted prior to their employment. The tests were administered after treatment to both control and experimental groups. The results of the independent samples t-tests imply that the mean difference between the two groups was not statistically significant for the intermediates in the pre-test and the groups were homogenous before the research. Although the experimental groups scored higher in the pre-test, the difference was not statistically significant. It is also indicated that the mean difference in the vocabulary posttest was statistically significant for the intermediates. That is to say, the experimental intermediates outperformed the control group after the treatment. It can be argued that role-playing technique is effective to enhance EFL learners' vocabulary knowledge if it is included in language activities. Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is supported. In addition, it was found that role-playing as a technique of improving EFL learners' tendency for vocabulary learning is capable of meeting the expected needs both for the beginners and intermediates. This implies that role-playing as a communicative technique possesses the capacity to facilitate and foster the EFL learners' vocabulary development.
