SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
Schematic knowledge refers to a mental representation or plan about a specific situation or event. It is a neglected variable in second language acquisition. The impact of content schematic knowledge on the accuracy and complexity of EFL learners writing was investigated. A total of 30 EFL learners were selected from two general English classes at the university. There was only one group of participants in the study who were at the intermediate level. At the very beginning of the study, Key English test was used to monitor and check the proficiency level of the participants. There were no instructional interventions in the present study inasmuch as the researcher intended to examine the participants' written task performance with regard to the impact of content schematic knowledge on grammatical accuracy and complexity. Two descriptive tasks were used in the study in which the participants were asked to describe a situation. One of the writing tasks was on a topic for which they had content schematic knowledge and one was related to a topic for which they had no content schematic knowledge. Using a checklist, the researcher specified the participants' content schematic knowledge on different topics. Based on the results of the checklist, two topics were selected; for one of the topics, the participants had content schematic knowledge and for the other one, they did not have content schematic knowledge. For examining the effect of content schematic knowledge on written language production, grammatical accuracy and complexity of the tasks were analyzed and quantified. Descriptive and inferential statistics (paired sample t-test) were used to analyze the results. The results revealed that content schematic knowledge had no significant impact on the intermediate learners' accuracy of written descriptive tasks. However, it had a significant impact on the grammatical complexity of the participants.
