Vocabulary learning is one of the most important areas of research in second and foreign language learning. Different techniques of teaching and learning vocabulary have been researched in this regard. Two of them are predicting meaning in context and brainstorming. In this thesis, the researcher aimed at examining the effects of predicting meaning in context and brainstorming among 60 (both male and female) intermediate Iranian language learners. The researcher divided them into three different groups: the participants in the brainstorming group (Group 1); the participants in the predicting meaning from context group (Group 2) and the participants in the control group (Group 3). The researcher administered a 40-item test based on a scale adopted from Wesche and Paribakht (1993) to assess their knowledge of some English words. With regard to treatment, the researcher based the treatment session instructions on Nation (1990) for the predicting meaning from context group and taught the learners those contextual clues that were likely to help infer or guess the meanings of the unknown words. To continue with the brainstorming group, learners were asked to examine together the title of the selection they were about to read whereas the control group received the words in a decontextualized list with the Persian equivalents on the right side of the list. Having completed the treatment, the researcher gave them a 30-item test to see the effects of the strategies that were taught. The results showed that the participants in بpredicting meaning from contextپ and بbrainstormingپ groups did better in their performances showing the positive effects of the two strategies.
