The basis of present research that concerns with the study of production of mental images while reading a novel is on an undeniable fact : the reading is a kind of vision during which imaginary world of the text exposes itself mentally to reader. In comparison with affairs which our view counters in our daily lives, mental images (elements) don't exist independently before the view reaches them. This means that these images are formed at the same time of seeing. But this kind of vision depends closely on the way which text shows these elements. These properties of the mental images in comparison with real ones causes the study of decisive factors of imaginary constructions in the first chapter : the consciousness of reader and the text. Our special view to reader, as a factor that should be studied first of all is due to the important role of this factor in forming raw material of the imagination that is supplied by the data of the text in the mould of his consciousness, something that results in mental representation of these data for the reader. The second chapter explains the subject of mental representation from different views. In this chapter, mechanisms of function of brain that get involved in forming mental representation of the text are studied. From then, mental representation is considered as process which the brain of human kind manages it, because this is the brain that, with data process of text, connects them in such a way that a coherent representation is resulted from these data. So, in the second chapter, we searched and studied the mechanisms interfering in the reading of texts that are known as narrative ones. The discussions of this part are filled with theories and tests done by known experts of this field. The third chapter is a chapter that is called "practical" in researches like the one is presented here. This chapter, in fact, is a practical test of views that was discussed in first two chapters. The content of questions like of other parts of this work is extracted from the text of Emile Zola's L'Assommoir that is presented to a selected group of real readers from PhD students of Tabriz and Tarbiat Modares universities, in order to satisfy the need which we announced since the beginning of the work and in its title. The total of these chapters, both from the theoretical and the practical views, wants to provide a suitable response to the questions like ones followed : what is the mental image ; what is the relationship between mental image and literary reading ; where is the related place to two elements of reader and text in producing mental representation of the text ; how do two focuses of mental representation, consciousness and memory, share, each one in its own place, in understanding of an imaginary work ?.
