دکارت به عنوان پدر فلسفة جدید از بزرگترین فلاسفة دوران جدید به‌شمار می‌رود .فلسفه او چه در زمان خودش و چه پس از او همواره مورد توجه بوده و مفسران بسیاری کوشیده‌اند تفسیری نو از نظام فکری او ارائه دهند .کاتینگهام از جمله دکارت‌شناسان بزرگی است که آثار متعددی دربارة ابعاد گوناگون نظام فکری دکارت دارد و تازه‌ترین ترجمه از مجموعه کامل آثار دکارت در زبان انگلیسی را او) به همراه دو تن دیگر (منتشر کرده‌اند.ویژگی منحصربه‌فرد تفسیر کاتینگهام از فلسفة دکارت این است که او چون مترجم آثار دکارت است با احاطة کامل به تمام ابعاد فکری او و با توجه به آثاری که گاه از نظر دیگر مفسران دور مانده یا کم‌اهمیت تلقی شده است به شرح و تفسیر نظام فکری دکارت می‌پردازد .کاتینگهام می‌کوشد تا با نظر به توجه اصلی دکارت به پی‌ریزی مبانی علم نوین، فلسفه او را به‌گونه‌ای تفسیر کند که او را از حالت یک مابعدالطبیعه‌دان محض درآورد و به‌نوعی نشان دهد که آنچه دغدغه اصلی دکارت را تشکیل می‌داده است نه پرداختن به مباحث بی‌حاصل فلسفی بلکه استفاده از فلسفه برای بنیان‌نهادن مبانی علم بوده است .البته بدیهی است که دکارت به‌فراست دریافته بود که برای پی‌افکندن مبانی علم نوین، نخست باید طرح فلسفه‌ای نو در اندازد.بنابرآنچه گفته شد، ما می‌کوشیم در این رساله، به چند موضوع محوری فلسفه دکارت از منظر کاتینگهام بپردازیم که آنها عبارتند از ۱) :روش دکارت و جایگاه شک در آن، ۲) کوژیتو، ۳) براهین اثبات وجود خدا در فلسفة دکارت و جایگاه خدا در نظام فلسفی دکارت، ۴) جهان دکارتی و انسان در نگاه دکارت .و امید آن را داریم که بتوانیم تصویری تازه و متفاوت از دکارت و نظام فکری او ارائه دهیم

Descartes as the father of modern philosophy is among the great philosophers of early modern period. From the seventeenth century onwards until our times, his thought has attracted so many thinkers of various philosophical attitudes. There are a lot of specialists and commentators who have tried to reinterpret and explicate his system of thought. John Cottingham is one of the most famous of them who has written several books and articles on Descartes and his philosophy. Moreover he is the author, in collaboration with R. Stoothoff and D. Murdoch, of a new two volume translation of The Philosophical Writings of Descartes.An unique characteristic of Cottingham's views is that he, as a result of engaging in translating Descartes philosophical writings, deals with his system of thought through a comprehensive understanding which can not be seen among other specialists who try to comment Descartes views. Cottingham's interpretation of Descartes is especially characterized by his outstanding position that he devotes to science and scientific interest in Descartes system; a thing which has been neglected or disvalued in other Descartes specialists. Cottingham tries to interpret Descartes philosophy mainly as a preparation for science especially for physics, so that the picture of Descartes as a traditional metaphysician can be excluded. He maintains that what constitutes the pivotal concern for Descartes in building his new system is not dealing with the futile traditional philosophical problems but is making philosophy as a vehicle for establishing the foundations of science.Accordingly, we in our dissertation try to deal with some basic subjects in Descartes philosophy upon which Cottingham's writings on Descartes have been focused. These subjects are as follows: 1) Descartes' Method and the position of doubt in it; 2) Cogito; 3)Descartes' Proofs on God; and the Signification of God in Cartesian Thought; 4) Cartesian Word and Man
