means algorithm. For each cluster, the mean vector and the covariance matrix are calculated and based on these calculations, a mixture of three elliptical Gaussian functions as a PDF for the skin color distribution, is proposed. By applying this function on the chrominance components of the pixels of the input image, a value between zero and one is assigned to each pixel which finally results in an SPM image. In the next stage, an approach based on contour plots is proposed for extracting the skin regions from the SPM image. The extracted regions are face candidates. In the last stage, Bayesian discriminating features method is utilized for verification of the face candidates. The algorithm of face detection based on the proposed technique has been tested on different databases such as University of tabriz, provided by author, CBCL and IFD. The best results in terms of detection rate have been achieved by IFD database, that is ۹۶ and the second best achieved for University of Tabriz database which is ۹۲ . The results show that although using skin color properties decreases the running time of the algorithm, on the other hand, it decreases the detection rate.-based face detection methods. In these methods, specifying of skin color regions is the first step to face detection, which is usually accomplished by skin color modeling. The goal of the skin color modeling is to think of a metric in which the skin regions are extracted from the original image. In this thesis, ۱۳۷۳۱ skin color samples have been gathered from the different databases and then, mapped in YCbCr color space. Afterwards the luminance components of the mapped samples are discarded and the samples that containing only chrominance components, have been divided into three clusters by means of K- Abstract: Skin Color is a useful property in color
