SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note

The effects of salinity and aquase extracts of different parts of two weeds (Amaranthus retroflexus and Chenopodium album) on growth and production of effective medicinal substances were investigated in 2008. Aquase extracts of different parts of weeds (root, shoot, total plant and control) prepared in 10 diluted solution. Salinity treatments were 4, 8 and 12 ds/m NaCl and control. A factorial set of treatments on the basis of complete block design was used with three replications. The results showed that germination rate of V. officinalis and P. ovata severly decreased by shoot and total plant extracts. In all cases, shoot extracts had more effects than other parts. Leaf area during four months after seedling emergence, leaf number during eight months after seedling emergence and root dry weight of V. officinalis decreased with root extracts and four ds/m salinity level, but this treatment had no significant effect on leaf dry weight and 1000 kernal weight of P. Ovata. Essential oil content increased with four ds/m salinity. Also differences between various parts of two weeds on most traits were not significant. A. retroflexus showed remarkable allelopathic effect on V. officinalis radicle and plumule length and P. ovata fertile stem number, total dry weight, leaf number and leaf area. Dry weight of P. ovata and Leaf area of V. officinalis during four months after seedling emergence decreased with increasing salinity. However, low salinity had no significant effect on traits. Seed germination rate and other traits decresed by high salinity levels. Because of high reduction in growth and development of plants due to both allelopathic extract and salinity, it was concluded that the control of these weeds or at least one of them is necessary specially during seed germination and early growth of thease plants
