منطقه استراتژیک خاورمیانه، که زمانی مهد و خاستگاه تمدن¬‌های اولیه بشری و محل ظهور و پیدایش ادیان بزرگ بوده است، امروزه همچنان اهمیت خود را به عنوان مرکز ثقل سیاست بین¬المللی حفظ کرده است، هر چند که هنوز در خصوص مرزها و محدوده منطقه خاورمیانه دیدگاه¬ها و نظر‌های متفاوتی وجود دارد؛ اما با این حال عناصری نظیر حوزه تمدن اسلامی، منابع انرژی و نفت، اهمیت ژئوپولیتیک و ن‌هایت رنج و محنت فراگیر جهانی به واسطه منازعات دراز مدت در این منطقه را می¬توان مؤلفه¬‌هایی دانست که خاورمیانه با آن تعریف می¬شود. برخی خاورمیانه را یک مفهوم جديد در مرز بندی¬‌های سیاسی و اقتصادی دوره نوین می¬دانند. به زعم این گروه کشور‌های خاورمیان‌های هیچ اشتراک تاریخی، فرهنگی و قومی‌و حتی جغرافیایی با هم ندارند. فقط وجود منابع عظیم انرژی نظیر نفت ... به علاوه موقعیت استراتژیک آن در عصر جدید باعث شده است که این منطقه به عنوان واحدی مجزا در جغرافیای سیاسی جهان شکل بگیرد، پس خاورمیانه یک مفهوم جدید و عوامل تشکیل دهنده آن اشتراكات اقتصادی، سیاسی و استراتژیک می¬باشد. بر خلاف نظر فوق دست‌های دیگر بر این باورند که خاورمیانه یک مفهوم جغرافیایی و تاریخی می¬باشد. این منطقه از جهان دارای سابقه و ریشه¬‌های تاریخی مشترکی است و حتی سابقه تاریخی آن به دوره¬‌های پیش از اسلام و باستان می¬رسد. در واقع خاورمیانه مهد به وجود آمدن ادیان خاصی در جهان است و سپس با ظهور اسلام در این منطقه، اسلام به عامل اصلی و تعیین کنند‌های تبدیل شده است. به لحاظ تاریخی خاورمیانه به عنوان چهارراهی باعث پیوند امپراطوری¬ها، فرهنگ¬ها و ارتش¬ها چه در زمان صلح و چه در زمان جنگ بوده است و به لحاظ دسترسی به سرزمین¬‌های حیاتی و راه¬‌های آبی تجاری به عنوان یک منطقه حساس مطرح بوده است. در عصر جدید نیز کشور‌های خاورمیان‌های به واسطه اشتراکات تاریخی دارای سرنوشت واحد و مشترکی شده¬اند. با این تعبیر مفهوم خاورمیانه یک مفهوم با سابقه است که اشتراکات تاریخی، فرهنگی و مذهبی عوامل اصلی و تأثیرگذار در تشکیل این واحد می¬باشد
