SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
Although not particularly well-explored within Ottoman and Islamic studies, there were significant developments within regional Islamic thought during the early 16th century. Specifically, developmetns within Ottoman court and intellectual life during this period were instrumental in the imperial elite's gradual adoption of a complex ideological vision based upon an idealized support of shari a defined according to norms of Sunni orthopraxy, whereby enemies of state increasingly came to be labelled as such according to religious terminology. The writings of one somewhat neglected Ottoman prince, Korkud (ca. 1468-1513), offer an excellent entry to these developments. Korkud was the eldest son of the Ottoman Sultan Bayazid II. A comprehensive intellectual biography of this prince qualitatively widens and deepens our understanding of the modalities of Ottoman imperial rul, the social imperatives driving intellectual output at the time, and the forces behined the articulation of a specifically Ottoman style of Islamic piety. This study includes Problems of Korkud's Biography, Korkud's Role in Ottoman Religio-Political Discourse, Scholarly works written by Korkud, Korkud's Cultural production, Sources from Korkud's Court, Dysfuncctional family Ottoman: Korkud and the Sehzade System of Provincial Rule, Pirates, Sea Ghazis, and Slaves: Korkud and the Pursuit of Global Ghaza, Kalam in the Service of State: Hafiz al-insan and the Articulation of an Ottoman Islam, Every Soul Tastes Death: Da'wat al-nafs al-taliha and the Politics of Piety, Korkud In Cairo: the Hajj as Justification for Self-Exile, the Imperatives of the Sehzade System and Korkud's Demise.
