Transpersonal Psychology is a subfield of Psychology integrating the spiritual components of human experience, alongside psychological phenomena. It focuses on what lies beyond the ego. Transpersonal picks up where modern psychology leaves off. Transpersonal consist of three domains: 1) Psychology beyond the ego; 2) Integrative/Holistic Psychology and 3) Psychology of transformation. This dissertation will examine transpersonal experiences and transcendence of the ego. This study will help clarify how psychotherapists work with transcendence of the ego in psychotherapy, as it relates to quality of life. The purpose of this study was to have an understanding of transcendence of the ego in transpersonal psychotherapy and if there is a correlation with quality of life. A survey completed amongst APA members and psychologists revealed that clients usually express their personal experiences in religious language. Another study revealed that 72% of psychologists, therapists, and counselors address religious or spiritual issues in therapy sessions. Psychology has traditionally addressed the Mind and Body but has not focused on the spirit. Research shows that 96% of Americans believe in a higher power, yet this falls by the waste side in traditional psychology and psychotherapy. Spirituality appears to be important components as it relates to individual culture. Participants were interviewed using a phenomenological approach and provided subjective answers, about their personal experiences transcending their own egos, how they work with transcendence in psychotherapy and how transcending the ego effects quality of life. Transpersonal Psychology incorporates modern Psychology & spirituality. Based on this research study, psychotherapists posit that working towards transcendence of the ego after building ego strength can improve quality of life.
