SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
The objective of this thesis is to report on the design and fabrication of a claddingpumped rare-earth-doped ZBLAN fiber laser in a free-space linear cavity. The double-clad structure with high numerical aperture allows for efficient pumping of the gain medium. The influence of pumping scheme, fiber length, and coupling efficiency on the laser output characteristics are discussed in detail. The key factors which influence mode competition in the lasing spectrum are analyzed. Moreover, the mode power distribution and mode competition are investigated. Their influence on the wavelength shifting of the laser spectrum is also analyzed. Future improvements suggested for this CW laser cavity include power scaling and operation in a pulsed mode.
