Text of Note
The unsatisfactory condition of preschool caregivers' in nurturing children has been a source of concern to all stakeholders in education. Assessing caregivers' competency has the tendency of improving the educational development of children in preschool centres. Based on these reasons, the researcher investigated the resourcefulness, creativity, flexibility, organizational competence and caregivers' knowledge of assessment in nurturing preschools in Kaduna Metropolis. The design incorporated for the study was descriptive survey research design. The sample size consisted of 151 preschool Caregivers from a population of 3024 caregivers in 140 public pre-school centres as well as 616 private preschools centres, using simple random sampling. An instrument on Assessment of Caregivers Competence in Nurturing Children (ACCNC) rating scale with 31 items, were designed by the researcher. The instrument ACCNC was validated by experts in Early Childhood Education Department, Kwara state University Malete and tested to determine its reliability. The reliability of the assessment of caregivers' competence in nurturing children rating scale instrument was correlated usingtest-retestand yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.78. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Research questions were answered using frequency, percentage and mean while the hypotheses were analyzed using an independent samples t-test, at 0.05 level of significance. The analysis of the data revealed that caregivers' competence in nurturing children in Kaduna metropolis as regards to the caregivers' resourcefulness creativity, flexibility, organizational competence and knowledge of assessment was average. However, there was significant difference between public and private school caregivers' level of flexibility (t = 3.58; df = 149; p< 0.05) and caregivers' levels of organizational competence(t = 2.06; df = 149; p< 0.05) based on school type. The study established that there was no significant difference between public and private school caregivers' level of resourcefulness (t = 1.86; df = 149; p> 0.05). Caregivers' level of creativity(t = 1.62; df = 149; p> 0.05)and caregivers' level of knowledge of assessment (t = 1.06; df = 149; p> 0.05) based on school type. On the basis of these findings, the study concluded and established that since caregivers' level of flexibility and caregivers' levels of organizational competence indicators were imperative to nurturing of preschool children within the metropolis. It was recommended that training and retraining of caregivers/teachers on how best to use the physical environment, creating an enabling environment that supports pre-school children and organize learning corners and be flexible in nurturing preschool is of paramount importance.
