SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
Conflict is inevitable in any organisation and arises as people in the organisation carry out their functions by means of adjustments and compromises among competitive elements in its structure and membership. The university establishment being a center of learning, with diverse needs is not left out. It has been observed that Nigerian universities has for decades been faced with so many crisis ranging from conflict between academic staff and the university administrators, students versus the academic staff, students versus the university authorities non-academic staff versus the university administrators. Therefore, Conflict management in an organisation entails an approach and practice of being able to identify and handle conflicts rationally, equitably, and competently. This study therefore, examined the relationship between conflict management strategies and administrative effectiveness. This study therefore utilized a mixed method (Triangulation method) approach. The quantitative data were collected from 290 academic and non-academic staff members of three selected federal universities in the North Central-Nigeria, while six participants from the staff in the three selected universities were purposefully selected for interview using semi-structured questions. Structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and Nvivo software were used to analyze the data collected from questionnaire survey and interviews respectively. The statistical result shows a positive relationship between conflict management strategies (negotiation, compromise and collective bargaining) and job accomplishment. The result also revealed a positive and significant relationship between conflict management strategies and administrative behaviour constructs except between avoidance and administrative behaviour which suggest that there is a need for mediation. The qualitative findings support the result of the quantitative study for both job accomplishment and administrative behaviour. It was recommended that the authorities of Nigerian universities should adopt blend of management strategies in managing their conflicts in their institutions in order to enhance administrative effectiveness.
